Insulin status is important determinant of weight reduction on vascular function
At week six they attended an intensive seven-hour, silent meditation retreat. Comfort Food May Be Self-Medication for Stress, Dialing Down Stress Response A new study indicates that many humans might be self-medicating when faced with chronic stress, by eating more comfort foods containing sugar and fat. In the long term, the habit may dampen down the bodys stress response, governed by the hormone cortisol, according to UCSF researchers. In a study of 59 healthy, pre-menopausal women published in the November issue of the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, UCSF psychologist Elissa Epel, PhD, and her colleagues found that among women who ranked in the top quarter for chronic life stress, having more abdominal fat was associated with lower daily cortisol secretion, and with less hormone secretion in response to acute stress. Researchers used a scientifically tested survey to gauge psychological stress before and after the four-month study, and recorded the womens fat and cortisol levels.

That would truly make the world a better place. Eating/exercising/sleep/stress aren’t individual elements in a vacuum they are all interconnected. The more people exercise the less stressed they are, the less stressed people are the less likely stress eaters (who often become overweight or obese) are going to overeat. Stress Reduction and Mindful Eating Curb Weight Gain Among Overweight Women
They found that individuals with higher baseline plasma insulin levels (above median >12 uIU/ml), who had greater than 10 percent weight loss had significantly improved brachial artery macro-vascular flow-mediated vasodilation and micro-vascular reactive hyperemia. In contrast, vascular function did not change significantly in the lower insulin group (?12 uIU/mL) despite similar degree of weight loss. In analyses using a five percent weight loss cut-point, only micro-vascular responses improved in the higher insulin group. “Our study has shown that insulin status is an important determinant of the positive effect of weight reduction on vascular function with hyperinsulinemic patients deriving the greatest benefit,” explained corresponding author Noyan Gokce, MD, FACC, associate professor of medicine at BUSM and Director of Echocardiography at BMC.

Sleep, stress reduction may help weight loss
Women in the trial who were assigned to a weight loss intervention had a goal of 10 percent weight reduction during the course of one year achieved through a diet intervention with or without aerobic exercise . “So this program was highly achievable and reproducible. We are not talking about drastic weight loss,” said McTiernan. The researchers measured levels of C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, interleukin-6, leukocyte and neutrophil in 439 women. At the end of one year, C-reactive protein reduced by 36.1 percent in the diet-alone group and by 41.7 percent in the diet and exercise group. Interleukin-6 decreased by 23.1 percent in the diet group and 24.3 percent in the diet and exercise group. McTiernan and colleagues found a mild dose response, as there were greater reductions in these measures among women who lost at least 5 percent of their body weight.
